Story behind the song
Years ago, on a trip up north in caravan, my mom had us stop in Saint Louis, and she showed us the neighborhood she grew up in. She told us about riding bikes in that neighborhood, up and down steep hills by the school she attended. Her story about her and her little brother resonated with me, as I had memories of the same experiences in Memphis with my big sister. She was always a storyteller, and would spread a quilt out in our front yard under a maple tree, and while cool breezes blew and caused the leaves of that old maple to give a relaxing strobing effect to the light filtering down through them, we would lay in her lap while she read fantastic adventures like Journey to the Center of the Earth, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. That old quilt became a magic carpet, taking us on incredible journeys on soft early summer afternoons. This song is a tribute to her and her ministry raising four kids who were surely a little difficult, with love and laughter. It's my prayer that God gives her many more years of laughter and love.
Lyrics
In Saint Louis, seems you made your mark Riding bikes each day in street and park Left your little brother in your dust And Let him catch up, each time he fussed North Saint Louis just ain't the same Since you moved away and changed your name Found a handsome guy and settled down On the younger side of town Chorus: As you look back through these many years Full of happy times, and maybe tears I hope the memories you've saved Were a treasure you found along the way May you find joy with each sunrise May only gladness fill your eyes God grant you laughter each sundown For the love you've spread around. Those early years of paying rent In a budget duplex apartment When the roaches boiled out of the vent And you grabbed the kids and away you went. You called Dad up, so full of fright And you said you'd not spend another night So he packed you up and you came to stay In our little kingdom far away. Chorus: Four crazy kids sure made it fun And you'd send us out to watch us run 'Twas a place of magic you built us there Not a lot to have, but a lot to share Where a blanket underneath a tree Was Nemo's submarine at sea Or the Wind in the Willow Trees Or Ahab's ship on the stormy seas Chorus: Years flew by, days came and went (Almost 33 thousand of them) Those kids grew up and moved apart Taking pieces of your giving heart But now we're not too far away And we try to visit more these days Bringing great grandkids to sit awhile And to see their Gigi smile! Chorus:
